A question is a question that demands a response or an answer. On a daily basis, you may have questions. Some questions are open ended needing explanation, explanation, and more, while some questions need only an answer of a yes or no. Sometimes, people ask questions that don't necessarily need a response, but are simply for someone to take note of (rhetoric questions). It is based on the structure and the nature of the inquiry, the answer which follows must answer what the question is looking for. Most students fail in their exams but not because they're dumb but due to their inability to know what the question is asking of them. The inability to express the question properly leads to an incorrect action or response. After an presentation, it is important to feel comfortable if people inquire about your presentation. This could be a sign you were able to keep people engaged during what you were presenting and that your presentation sparked interest in other people. How you answer those questions will increase the view of your audience of you and increase their confidence in your company's product or services. As a professional you will be required to master the art of asking relevant questions , but more importantly, how to effectively answer questions.

Before you take on the task of answering a question, be sure you know in your mind about what the question is about. It is not a bad idea to start by getting clarity on what's being asked. You can ask politely "I am sorry, I'm not sure if I grasp what you're asking If you could rephrase the question, what would you suggest?" You'll be more effective in such an instance than speaking in the same voice with no knowledge or clarity. Keep in mind that the purpose of answering questions is to provide a valuable contribution to the one who is searching for an answer. Avoid wasting time. Seek understanding first.

One strategy to increase your capacity to respond to any question in an appropriate and objective manner is if you allow the person who asked the question time before asking. Some people are slow to clarify exactly what they want to know. In answering a question prior to it has been fully addressed may be insensitive. Do not presume that you are aware of where the person is asking you, hence you wish to help the person to understand the question. If you have time take the time to let the person "ramble" while you take note of key details. It gives you time to gather your thoughts and determine what is the best way to answer the question. The ability of listening gives you a high percentage of success with regards to your answers to questions.

You need to decide if you are competent to answer the question or if someone else has the. If you are not authorized, can you speak on this topic (journalists can make you look bad even though you're not supposed to be to the spokesperson of the company)? How deep should the answer be? The pauses and silences prove that you're just producing whatever material is in your mind but a clearly reasoned out answer is on its way. You can actually prepare someone who is expecting to answer you by saying "Let me think about it ..., Let me think." ..". That way the person does not sit idle thinking that they aren't hearing but you're actually ignoring or not paying attention. This helps in coming up with suggestions which you'll not regret over later. You can determine the best option to speak with confidence without leaving marks or new wounds.
