The word "question" refers to a statement which demands a response or an answer. On a daily basis, you can ask to be asked questions. There are certain questions that are open ended requiring explanation, elaboration and others, while some can be closed by requiring the answer "Yes" or "No. In some cases, there are questions that do not require a reply but only for someone to take note of (rhetoric or rhetorical questions). The format of the question, the response that follows must address what the questioner is trying to find. Many students fail tests not because of their dullness but simply because they don't be aware of the information being demanded of them. A failure to present the problem correctly can lead to a wrong action or response. After your presentation, you need to be content if people inquire about your presentation. It could be a sign that people were involved in your presentation and the program sparked interest in others. Your response to these questions can improve your audience's perception on you or increase their confidence in your company's product or services. As a professional, you'll be required to master ways to pose pertinent questions but most importantly how to respond effectively.

Before you dive into answering an inquiry, ensure that you're clear in your mind about what the question is about. It is not a bad idea to start by finding out the reason for the question being asked. Request politely "I apologize, but I don't seem to be able to comprehend what you're asking, would you mind rephrasing?" You'll communicate more effectively by doing this rather than shouting at the top of your lungs with no clarity or understanding. Keep in mind that the purpose of answering questions is for you to provide a valuable contribution to the person looking for an answer. Be quick to respond. Seek understanding first.

One technique that will increase the effectiveness of answering the question in a meaningful and objective way is to ensure that you allow the person who asked you the question to finish asking. Some people take time to describe precisely what they are seeking. If you answer a question before it is completely asked could be insensitive. Don't believe that you know what direction the question is going hence you wish to help the person to clarify the issue. If you're short on time allow the person to "ramble" while you make note of the key factors. It gives you the time to think through and formulate one of the most suitable answers to the question. The ability to listen will give you a high success rate in answering the questions.

You have to figure out if you're qualified to answer the question or someone else is. Is it your right to talk about this subject (journalists are able to haunt you even when you're not required to be the company's spokesperson)? How long should your answer be? Silence and breaks in the conversation suggest that you're just making up whatever material you can think of in your mind but a clearly planned answer is expected. You can help the person waiting for an answer by saying "Let me think about it ..., Let me know." ..". That way the person does not sit there and think you've missed something and you're just ignoring, etc. Think through your thoughts and you'll be able to come up with statements that you'll feel good on later. You will know the best method to respond with wisdom without leaving the person with scars or fresh wounds.

However, it is important that you are comfortable sharing this information, so please use your own words. • listen from the heart: Your truth, your perspectives, your experience.
